Presenters

Karen Shirer, Ph.D., serves as Educational Program Specialist for MFLN Family Transitions. In this role, she provides content expertise to support the development of learn events, scholarly manuscripts, and facilitation of webinars.  She has 45 years of experience as an educator, manager, researcher, and administrator for family strengthening education programs in both formal and non-formal settings. In her previous Extension position before retiring, she provided statewide leadership for Extension programs in human development, health and nutrition, and financial empowerment education.

Dr. Shirer’s research interests include family education program development, working families, and other efforts that strengthen individual and family resilience. Her primary work focuses on designing curricula and program interventions for low-income families, most recently for unmarried parents to help them parent together.

Ellie  McCann is Family Resiliency Extension Educator and Professor since September 2003. Ellie’s work focuses on improving the quality of families’ lives through times of transition. Ellie has developed and taught numerous classes, trainings, and curricula to professionals and parents, including the Parents Forever™ divorce education program and Parenting in the Age of Overindulgence, an online course. Prior to her work with Extension, Ellie worked with children and families in both community agencies and university settings. Ellie earned a master’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and is a Certified Family Life Educator.

Programming approval for 1.5 CEU credits has been granted for Social Work, Licensed Professional Counselors, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists from the UT Austin Steve Hicks School of Social Work. Check with your state licensing agency for reciprocity and/or credit approval if licensed for other professions or in one of the following states: CO, FL, HI, IA, KS, KY, MI, NY, ND, OH, OK

MFLN will be offering 1.5 Contact Hours from the National Council on Family Relations to Certified Family Life Educators (CFLE).

Certificates of completion are available for providers interested in documenting their professional development.
